Today, medicine has become separated from its roots of caring,
and engaging with patients to meet their real needs. As science
has expanded the role of the physician has transformed from
being the one family doctor we saw for everything, to one of
specialization. And with increasing specialization in medicine,
physicians now spend more time working on small parts of an
individual with little or no focus on the whole person.
The University of California San Francisco Medical Center Osher
Center for Integrative Medicine offers a real partnership with physicians
as well as access to modern medicine and to established practices
from around the world.
In 2007 Althea joined the Osher Center leadership board and
helped develop their strategic plan. We then went on to provide
seed capital for a new media campaign to generate awareness
of integrative medicine and raise a $25 million Endowment Fund
to support the long term sustainability of the center.
