Outsider Art Initiative

There are many individuals living with mental illness who are unable to communicate using spoken language. For these individuals, art is a powerful tool for self expression and an important window through which they can communicate with the outside world.

This initiative seeks to celebrate the importance of art in the lives of people living with mental illness and to shine light on the talent and creative capacity in which these artists contribute to our understanding of mental health.

Althea helped launch the Outsider Art Initiative in 2006 in an effort to support and raise awareness of the creative potential and visionary expression of individuals living with mental illness.
