An educational program founded by a third grade teacher,
Kid Scoop teachers more than basic academics. It was created
to inspire students to participate as citizens. Kid Scoop is
guided by a belief that the First Amendment may be our most
important Amendment – that in order for democracy to truly
function all must participate-- not only as voters; but even
earlier young people can contribute through community service
and making their voices heard in appropriate forums.
Kid Scoop started by promoting the use of the newspaper in
the classroom -- making education relevant, interesting and
effective. The first Kid Scoop project was a children’s
page for the newspaper. This page, called Kid Scoop“invites”
young people into the newspaper with pencil-grabbing, interactive,
curriculum-based activities. Activities on the page direct students
to other parts of the paper and, in the process, they learn
more about their local community.
Each week, Kid Scoop brings students an educational activity
page with interactive games, activities and puzzles in an award-winning
fun-filled page that is now published in 350 newspapers.Teachers
use the page in schools to promote standards-based learning
and parents use the Kid Scoop materials to foster academic success,
a joy of learning and family discussions.
Althea provided the support to expand the vision of connecting
educational activities to the community by funding the establishment
of the Kid Scoop Foundation as well as an annual writing award
that promotes great writing skills, literacy and education among
9 to 12 year olds.
